Personally, I think the most exciting storytelling is happening on TV with shows like True Detective, Breaking Bad, Scandal, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, Game of Thrones, Mad Men, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards...
Cinema is like Haiku. Roughly two hours to tell a story. How many great novels have been mangled to bits by the format? Maybe that's why there are so many multipart movies and sequels coming out these days.
I'm not disparaging the many great movies that have been made.. Just saying, there may be more creativity happening within the greater storytelling freedom of the TV format right now.
