I am surprised the firms, and some customers, make such big deal about that feature.

Both my TV and my BD player have 3D capability. They are supposedly good at it too. Like you, I've seen demos in the store. Big Whoop.
Since both my wife and I wear glasses, putting on the 3D glasses is at best a royal pain, at worst, not feasible.
I've passed on this.
