McCarthy didn't show so much depth as the fact she doesn't have to do outrageous comedy non-stop. Murray was good in this somewhat "real" story compared to all the other vehicles he has mugged and wisecracked through.
It took me decades to begin to like Murray. I recall when he first started SNL he had this perpetual smirk during sketches that reminded me of grade school kids thinking they're cute during skits. I actually thought he wasn't going to make it. Took him about three seasons to get over that. He wasn't ready for FDR but he IS ready for this role anytime.

...after his first couple of shows, saying he was the new kid and he was really trying so give him a chance.
It was off the wall and perfect - I've liked him ever since.
