I believe the alien creature is moved by human kindness - as when she falls in the street and people help her up and make sure she's OK. Much as humans at some point might be moved to stop consuming animals, so too the alien is moved not to destroy humans for consumption. Unfortunately, the restaurant scene shows she is not able to consume human food either. At this point, she has yet to encounter human savagery, but the final couple of scenes, where one guy wants sex for his kindness, and the guy I called the forest ranger actually tries to rape her are the other parts of the human equation. She is not prepared for this kind of savagery, with disastrous consequences. IMHO, the theme of human duality looms large in this film.
