Crowe, after the loss of his wife, feels compelled to seek out and bring his boys home from Turkey. They had received news 4 years before stating they were all lost in battle but Crowe had made a promise to his wife so he sets upon a journey not unlike Ulysses'.
The is a very wide film covering a lot of subplots. We learn of the horrors of WW1, the intolerance of Islam, the devotion of a father with nothing to lose, the befriending of "the enemy", and the promise of romance and a new life. Well done with enough action to keep you interested, enough drama to keep you intrigued, and enough romance to keep you hoping.
This is Crowe's first directorial duties and it turns out well. This film is timed for the big anniversary of Gallipoli and is rich with the history of ANZAC and their lasting effect after losing the battle but winning the war.
Worth a see.
