IMHO...
Cronenberg movies are typically never great, but not super bad either...
He does not care that you know its a movie...he has a surreal style that is evident...he pushes his actors to OVER-Act 85% of the time...he looks at his work as stand-alone art pieces in story telling...his camera work holds shots just a little too long and he frames everything...he is not afraid of genre jumping and tweaks each one just a little...the artsy actors enjoy working with him and always work for less...His movies are all him and I respect that...
Coldplay = Cronenberg
Radio Head = Lynch
He has worked outside the Movie Monster Machine has been able to survive...
Feature films
Stereo (1969)
Crimes of the Future (1970)
Shivers (1975)
Rabid (1977)
Fast Company (1979)
The Brood (1979)
Scanners (1981)
Videodrome (1983)
The Dead Zone (1983)
The Fly (1986)
Dead Ringers (1988)
Naked Lunch (1991)
M. Butterfly (1993)
Crash (1996)
eXistenZ (1999)
Spider (2002)
A History of Violence (2005)
Eastern Promises (2007)
A Dangerous Method (2011)
Cosmopolis (2012)
Maps to the Stars (2014)[44]
More good than bad on this list...but not great...
Naked Lunch was him having fun...he tries to shock you into confusion by not telling you this is real or not...he is not telling
Solid 3 stars out of 5...trippy fun that try's to make you feel uncomfortable...
Really great review Steve...Cronenberg movies more interesting than good or bad...typically well done...
Thanks
Mark
