I didn't see Under the Skin though looking at the subject matter, it doesn't look anything like this. I did a broad sketch of the series without much in spoilers. Its much more noir than superhero stories are typically.
The people who don't like it just can't stand Jessica Jone's character as she is hard and sarcastic and pushes people away. My own opinion is that people have trouble with the gender shift and can't see the issues underlying this show which have a great deal to do with abuse. I had no trouble with the main character and almost all supporting which I felt were very well done.
Basically a show about a small time "gifted" person just trying to keep to herself in a small neighborhood and gets drawn into awfulness because of crap luck. She's not really a superhero at all.
Follow Ups:
otherwise JJ is fairly disturbing for me which is what they were going for and they succeeded.
Nothing really compares to Under the Skin which is slow and arty to the extreme but the images and story stay with you, just a bit of a tough viewing experience.
