It is of course like saying someone is the best singer or the best painter...individual taste seems a big part of such a judgment.
I love many of Hitchcock's great movies, but not all of them were great.
And then I think of Tati's Playtime, a movie I've watched many times and will many times again...and it is a very personal expression, a massive project that ruined him financially, and of course, Hitchcock would have never made anything like this. Or Rosemary's Baby, another I see at least every year, or Wild Strawberries, or Pickpocket by Bresson, and on and on I could go.
So great he was, I certainly agree, but best? There are many bests for me.
