I tried to attend the 50th Star Trek Convention at the Rio in Las Vegas in the summer but it was completely sold out 5 months prior. I did attend my first and only convention two years prior and I had a good time. If you have not gone to one I'd recommend it.
I was pleased to have met several of the actors from several different shows - Barbara Luna the vixen in the original series was great - they seem just as happy to be there as I was.
I chatted with the wonderful singer/actor James Darren (Vic Fontaine in DS-9) and Chase Masterson (Leeta - DS-9) as well as Jeffrey Combs (Brunt/Weyoun etc - he seemed to play everyone). Really quite a friendly guy. Richard Hatch (BattleStar Galactica) and I spent about 15 minutes talking as he was showing me scenes from a new series on his phone. Most of the autographs were not too expensive - in the $25 or two for $40 kind of thing. Some exceptions.
I've been watching DS-9 lately and I have to say that from about season 4-7 this is probably the best of all of Star Trek. I liked certain episodes of others but the story arc - the writing of characters like Garak in these seasons was exceptional.
It;s funny that I disliked DS9 when it first aired. I think it was well ahead of its time and it largely began the idea of the season long story arc that later shows like Breaking Bad, Dexter and others would adopt. The downside back then was that people were not used to having to tune in each week for continuations - so you could not just drop in and watch one and miss it for three weeks. But now people watch everything on DVD etc so it is easy to watch them in order. DS9 largely had to be watched in order. So to all the folks who gave up - try it again. Nana Visitor was also great and she shakes the hand of very person who gets an autograph and thanks us for watching or being a fan. Peter Weller was also great.
Now I just wish DS9 would be released on Bluray.
