Not Elf. Yet still maybe one to consider for the holidays.
Fine performances by Mortensen and Ali anchor this effort by director Farelly (yes, the comedy guy).
Some music history, via the biographic retelling of the Dr.Don Shirley story; a real-life powerhouse, jazz/classical pianist.
Lots of dramatic meat with looks at socio-politics of race, class and sexuality. Does not ignore the points of contention, yet still manages to remind us with humor and lightness of our fundamental connections. Good to recall when so much energy goes into divisiveness.
Cheers,
K
Follow Ups:
Other than the one guy trying to make it home for christmas, the story had nothing to do with christmas, the guy could be needing to go home for any reason and the story would be unchanged.
I still can't believe the acting in that movie, what a fine performance in the central role, and supporting work. . The entire movie is top notch
Christmas movie, I need more holiday themes for me to call it that. It is one of the more astounding movies, along with free solo, I have seen lately.
However, some people cite die hard as a christmas movie for the same reason, christmas is mentioned in the movie. Well green book end as a friendship tale, so many I shouldn't be so quick to condemn . maybe change it up a bit for the holidays.
