In Reply to: RE: SO true about Kubrick! I finally got around to watching Barry Lyndon the other day..... posted by TWB on January 16, 2019 at 15:37:01
I sometimes go to a joint called the american cinematheque , they were in a week long run of Kubrick films. I saw barry lydon and felt the same way about the lead, and the movie, meh. I was hoping for better, considering the venue.
I was kind of regretting missing eyes wide shut. I was curious because it was being shown on a week end , usually reserved for good movies, and was supposed to be a big deal when it was released. I had no interest in the story when it came out, so was willing to give it a chance, plus I heard there was female nudity, if I am honest. I think it conflicted with a football game I wanted to see, so didn't go.
Your opinion about eyes wide shut pretty much confirmed my opinion formed without seeing the film , but i was willing to change my mind about it and check it out. No regrets now.
They did have kubrecks right hand man in for a short talk and questions about the films. On the night i went, he didn't say much beyond how great kubeck was. He did say the stories about barry Lydon being shot only with candlelight were untrue. he said they did do that , but only when they could.

TERRIBLE!
Regarding Kubrick, and especially BL, the linked documentary is worth watching
for many reasons. It's quite informative and entertaining.
