everyone... Strong and smart, but totally 'non-Hollywood' in its esthetic.
Acting and writing are top notch, and it tackles tough issues; faith, mortality and commitment in an unflinching fashion. Highly recommended if you're not seeking 'popcorn'.

On the Blu-ray is not to be missed. Paul schrader has long wanted to try his hand at what he calls the transcendental style. He cited elements of Bresson, Bergman, and Dreyer, along with some of his own Taxi Driver. He grew up in the church and is deeply familiar with the landscape. This is made to be slow, deliberate, avoiding both musical cues and camera movements. The result is a look into spiritual crisis that leaves plenty of ambiguity for the viewer to resolve for themself. Certainly far from any popular genre, as the influences cited above are very rarely reflected in modern movies.
