In Reply to: RE: Hey what do ya know... ol' saggy tits got nominated for Best Actress... posted by TWB on January 22, 2019 at 20:31:53
I have to laugh at the Academy sometimes. Black Panther is up for best picture - which is a joke since it has no nominations for acting, directing, cinematography, writing. So if it isn't good at any of these things what exactly makes it best picture material? It wasn't even the best Marvel movie of the year!
Meanwhile Star is Born is nominated for
Best Picture
Best Actor
Best Actress
Best Supporting Actress
Best Cinematography
Best Adapted Screenplay.
Otherwise known as ALL of the major categories - umm what - did it just direct itself?
I am not in the camp that thinks Star is Born is deserving of best picture or director - I have not seen all the others - it's a solid movie but IMO hardly a great movie.
I just think it's kind of dumb if the Academy is saying a film is the best at all these things - that is usually all brought together by the director. I would imagine it more difficult to direct when you also star in the thing.
I would not go out and see a Star is Born because it got nominated - why? If the story doesn't interest you why waste your time?
If it wins best picture - then waste your time. But I have a prediction for you - It won't.
Follow Ups:
I have come to realize that it really is a popularity contest rather than a reward for excellent work. This year and ASIB reminds me of 1991 when The Prince Of Tides was nominated in almost every category EXCEPT actress and director. To your point, did the movie direct itself? But another movie in 91 swept the Oscars... Silence Of The Lambs... Demme won that award and then achieved little else until his death... A "one hit wonder"..... In 1978 The Turning Point AND Julia (both films are movies which I have seen COUNTLESS times) were nominated each for 11 Oscars and Shirley Maclaine and Anne Bancroft and Jane Fonda for their roles in those films but that year Annie Hall (which I HATE along with Diane Keaton who I also HATE) won the top honors. A Star Is Born has had it's own checkered past with regard to the Oscars.... Judy Garland was touted to win the Best Actress Oscar in the 50's... So much so, that all the TV stations came to her hospital room where she had just given birth to her son to get her reaction. However, Grace Kelly won instead for The Country Girl (IMHO Grace Kelly NEVER was more than "arm candy" on ANY film she was ever in)! Garland really was great in ASIB and IMO was robbed of an Oscar that she should have had. There are countless other examples....
