The S300 will not support BD-Video 1.1 PIP at realease nor will it offer and ethernet connection for BD-Live Movies that I'm aware of to my knowledge. I'm being told that the 3rd Gen or "hi-end" unit (BDP-S500) may include these things. So not to split hairs with you, but I just read that the mandate is for all after June 07' (see below URL). It is however, nice to see that this unit will be supporting HDMI v1.3, AVC-HD disc encodings (it will be interesting to see if this improves PQ from MPeg4 sources) and it will also be interesting how the reviewers compare it to the S1. I"m sure it will get good reviews as did the PS3, however I see your point. It's not clear who will be manufacturing this unit Sony or Pioneer. My guess is that you're right and they'll be utilizing PS3 components; drives, transports, etc...
Follow Ups:
I have not been able to find that info. The mandate originally slated for June '07, was postponed until Oct.31, 2007, it was announced a few months back.
I'm not trying to nitpick, but as I've said before, I expect to eventually get a BD player, probably towards the end 07/early 08. I'm not in a rush, but I like to keep up. The S300 was originally anounced a while back, with a higher list price, but its been damn near impossible to get alot of details outside of the press releases. This really leads me to beleive that the S300 is just a holdover untill the S500 comes.
Time will tell I guess.
