The Toshiba HD-A20 sells for under $400, and it can be set for 480p, 720p or 1080p output (via HDMI), and standard DVDs look magnificent when upscaled. In fact, I mostly bought it as a high quality DVD player: The high definition part was a bonus. "Boot" time is around 40 seconds, after which it behaves like any other DVD player. It also plays HD DVD, but if you wish, you can simply ignore that and use it like a very good DVD player, though Toshiba mails you 5 free HD movies as a bonus. So far, no problems at all with the HDMI connection: No lost connections or pixelization. And it seems pretty tolerant of less-than-perfect DVDs. It has locked up on me once while playing an HD DVD thought to be defective, but it was only with that particular disk.
My main gripe is with the remote control which really needs to have frequently used controls enlarged and separated from the rest.
Just curious what you didn't like about the Oppo, as I've been interested in getting one for it's all-region capabilities.
