Does anyone else think that as the public learns industry is mucking around with formats again, there will be a big backlash against hi-def DVDs and consumers will demand a universal DVD format in players and media?
Follow Ups:
A "a universal DVD format in players and media" would be yet another format again so we would have DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray, and your new universal format. Up the confusion again.
I don't think there is ever much of a problem for the public with a new format. I think there is a problem when we get 2 or more new and competing formats. The problem is the competition, not the new format.
What we currently need is one less new format than we have, not another new one.

Actually, the problem frequently is that people don't want a new format. Did you buy into D-theater? How about Laser Discs? DAT? Mini Discs? I don't recall there being any format wars for those. SACD/DVD-A didn't die because of the format war, they died because nobody wanted hi rez audio. They chose MP3s instead. The trueth is that the studios need another way to make money. You can only put out so many Limited/director's cut/extended/superduper/special editions. Even George Lucas has drained the well dry. DVDs caught on because the picture was dramatically better, they had new feature in both use and content, and they were easier to store and MUCH EASIER TO USE. It was a difference people embraced. What do BD/HD DVD offer Joe six pack? A better picture definitely, but not as dramatic as VHS-> DVD, what else? More fetures. anything else?
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE HD DVDs, and I would love for them to become the new standard, but I'm just not sure its going to happen. Perhaps after 2009, whan they flick the digital/HD switch. People like DVDs, and can live with them being upscaled.
Just my 2 cents,
Jack
