You don't honestly believe that all the kiddies that got the PS3 for gaming own an HDTV, do you? I'ld wager that most PS3 are not hooked to an HDTV. Go to some of the PS3 forums, and you'll see lots of folks using them with SDTVs.

If you only have a standard def TV, you have no motivation (and probably no money) to get a PS3. All the advantages of the PS3 are invisible in standard def, so you're only faced with the disadvantages (more expensive games and bad selection at the moment).
I do go to PS3 forums and I'd say 95% of the denizens have HDTV. The other 5% feel stupid they didn't put the money toward a good HDTV and are frustrated they can't view the high def content.
The ONLY reason to buy a PS3 is for blu-ray (both games and movies) and the ONLY way to see the advantages of blu-ray is with HDTV.
It's not that complicated.
