Actually I think the old CRT based RPTVs are tough to beat in this regard, assuming you have space for about a 24 inch depth. I dont think Sony still makes their 46 incher, but the Hitachi models are similar. I know Hitachi makes a 51 inch model and I see it often advertized recently for about $700. Best $700 big scren picture on the planet.
The only down side is that these are heavy to move around, and you may not have the space to handle the depth.
My Sony 46 incher fits conveniently between two cabinets and the depth is just right to bring the screen even with the cabinets. Reliable too.
