It makes a big difference.
You can download the kind of games you'd play with your wife for $2.99 (like Piyotama--see link below) off the PSN store--the PS3 hooks right up. As for premium games, I just sold Call of Duty 3 for PS3 on ebay for only about $20 in anticipation of Call of Duty 4. Deals are out there.
A universal player won't let you play games and doesn't have a nice big hard drive four USB ports and bluetooth like the PS...and as for formats, well, there is tons of overlap. I just saw the Blue Planet and The Dream Is Alive IMAX documentaries on Blu-ray (it's also available on HD DVD). Black Book and several other BDs are on the way. The only thing on HD DVD I wish was out on Blu-ray is The Big Lebowski.
