I have one of these units - they do run warm. The vents are on the top of the unit. If you turn it on its side, you may need to leave ample room for the air to move. If you have a well ventilated area, I don't think it would matter. If you plan on packing it into a cabinet, it will not be happy.

Thanks for the heads up,,you're right mine stays pretty warm..Only real moving part is the hard drive right? Does it care which way is up?
Hard drive does not care which way it is mounted. There is also a cooling fan in there. Just make sure that the case is not hot to the touch wherever you are mounting it. Also you should probably favor the side with more empty volume on it as being the "up side". I think this means putting it on its left side if you were facing it. Take a look at the vents and make sure that you leave the warmest parts at the "bottom" so that convection carries the heat "up" off of them.
