I researched, read up and checked discount prices and the best I can find (and bought) is the Panasonic DMR ES-15.
List price here is $329 and I found it for $279. That is with the now standard one year warranty.
The British magazine What HiFi Sound & Vision considers it the best (non hard drive) recorder under 200 pounds ($500) which price level it beats by a rather large margin.
Follow Ups:
....Although I have the hard drive models I have found the Panasonics very reliable. Both mine are used extensively and have thus far performed faultlessly. (50% of use is by young kids who are less than delicate)
I suggest you buy some RAM discs for ease of recording, editing & re-recording. So when are you going to give it to your lady-friend? (the Panasonic Dave, the Panasonic!)
