I wonder just how many of them were purchased because they were pretty cool looking DVD players for just a few bucks more, and how many people will actually pay extra for HD movies versus five buck DVDs at Walmart. As with the VHS/Beta battle, whether or not there are rental movies will make or break a format.

and IF they actually buy an HD DVD movie or two they probably will see a difference in PQ and might go back for more. In my case, the boxes came with a free HDMI cable. In other cases, people were hooking up their HD-A2 with composite (!) cables; a little edumacation is still needed for widespread HDTV adoption.
Very true Oscar. My (first generation) Samsung BD-P1000 came with a generic HDMI cable and a red/white/yellow composite one. I traded up to a (second generation) BD-P1200, which came with the very same composite cable, but NO HDMI. That seemed a bit backwards to me.
