The better Denons have broadcast quality upscaling so the picture you get is basically as good as most HD content broadcast by TV studios since I gather most HD programmes are in fact upscaled SD.
The fact the programmers won't reveal how much content is upscaled says a lot.
DVDs upscaled via any Denon which uses the Realta chip are definitely good enough to make you forget about HD DVD or BluRay until the smoke clears, and should be a significant upgrade over you Samsung player.
