The end game will go this way:
People stop buying HD DVD, shops stop re-stocking shelf space with HD DVD, then Universal and Paramount have to go blu, and last Toshiba must go blu.
People acted fast, the main delay in this process is that shops and Warner, Universal and Paramount want to sell out their HD DVD stock at the highest possible prices, before they switch off HD DVD:-)
Toshiba cannot force people to buy HD DVD movies, not even by giving away players for free:-)
Follow Ups:
There's the slightest (perhaps remote?) possibility the Toshiba Fire sale could have a significant impact in the weeks to come.
HD DVD doesn't have many juicy movies 1Q 2008 and this would be the first week that the Warner decision will have had an influence.
"...Net HD DVD sales, according to Nielsen, constituted only 15% of hi-def disc sales last week. And the top HD DVD seller, The Kingdom, sold just 10% as many copies as the top Blu-ray Disc release, 3:10 to Yuma."
I don't believe HD DVD can survive a steady diet of 85:15 Blu-ray sales edges.
