Hi,
IMO, SONY didn't stop making the SXRD sets because of the law suit -- they did it because they simply can't make the sets reliably. The optical blocks seem to be beyond their manufacturing capabilities. I have seen this sort of thing first hand in the aerospace industry. Just because design engineers come up with a killer theoretical concept doesn't mean the manufacturing/process engineers can build it.
As for the bulbs, well, buying a couple now is probably a good idea but I seriously doubt these sets will last more than a few years anyway. Yes, I have little faith. SONY of today seems to be a shadow of its former self. Sorry, I hate to say that as I used to be a huge SONY fan. BTW, I am still waiting to be blown away by my new Blu-ray player. Most discs offer only a little better picture quality than DVD, and at least one was not as good as its DVD counterpart. There was an article on this in last Sunday’s Washington Compost. They finally got something right.
Cheers, Joe
Follow Ups:
They may not of stopped making them solely because of the law suite, but I suspect it was a factor. The article saying Sony was to stop making RPTV said they were losing alot of money on them. tThey did/will replace just about every optical block on the early SXRDs, due to the defective design. Now they have to reimburse people who had to get new TVs or outside repairs. Apparently, they had no problems with the OB in the SXRD2s. Isn't JVC still making their DILA TVs? Same technology.
As for BDs, Yea, I'm getting less enchanted with them too. There are some really superb ones out there, but they are very few and very far between. The vast majority are good but not great. I don't think they are putting that much effort into most of the discs-maybe they are focused too much on audio, at the expense of video. Regardless, they certainly aren't anywhere near their potential. Then there's the selection of titles...
