The Sony Bravia XBR LCDs are getting better. I've not been an LCD fan due to the black crush and greyish blacks but the new Sonys are good for watching daylight/brightly lit scenes. They still arent' as good as good plasmas on dark scenes however. And they're not cheap. The rest of the LCDs don't do it for me at all.
If you watch movies LCD is still not quite good enough in shadow detail or color depth, and that includes the Bravia XBRS, the best LCDs I've seen.
If I HAD to buy a TV now I'd go with the Panny plasma. Go with the largest screen you can afford.
If you don't mind the greish blacks and you don't watch programs or movies with night scenes, LCD may be OK.
Follow Ups:
Been an owner of a 50 in. Panny since early 2004 and love it. At the time I compared the Fujitsu, Pioneer, Panny and Mitsubishi. Panny was best bang for buck and was very close to the Fujitsu. Fujitsu was the best but VERY expensive.
