TH42PX80U
weighs only 56 lbs, is $1100 and is very bright
The other option is the Toshiba Regza LCD
42RV530U
Thats 1080p and $1200 at least at CC
it weighs only 40 lbs which is a great weight for a 42 inch panel
Either I think is a better option than the Sony
Close up the Panasonic Plasma has a little more screen door whereas the LCD I'm certain is screen door free.
Either of these would be very nice but today I vote for the Toshiba 1080p--a great price for an excellent set.
Follow Ups:
It has the best contrast, deepest blacks and best shadow detail of any LCD I've seen...and I'm not a fan of Sony, heck, I'm not even a fan of LCD.
The Tosh didn't impress me nearly as much, especially with the blacks and shadow detail.
Contrast and deep blacks can be very beneficial for aging eyes, at least it was for my 84 year old dad. Back before LCs were any count and plasmas were affordable, I got him a Panny CRT with great blacks and contrast - he loved it.
Check out the aftermarket large key universal remotes. Those should handle most functions your mom would use.
