We have a Panasonic 50" plasma, and love it. I still prefer plasma to LCD. It just looks more 'real'. Went to the store to look at the 42", but a sale on the 50" was too much to resist. Be sure to calibrate it, as out of the box settings are not the best. Google for the settings, and you can usually find them on the net, without having to get a calibration disk yourself.
Follow Ups:
Panasonic seems to lead the market not only in high-end plasmas but also quality entry to midrange models. Without doing a lot of in depth research I would be comfortable buying a Panasonic plasma at any price point.
I have to agree that plasma still holds a noticeable edge over LCD in picture quality. Even with the improved viewing angle and deeper blacks, LCD still isn't quite there with the plasma screens.
There are NO viewing angle issues with plasma but even the finest LCDs have a slight shift in image quality if you're not almost dead center.
As for screen reflections from plasma displays, ours is in the basement where the lighting is subtle to dark. I might consider an LCD only if I had to place it in a brightly lit room where the plasma screen might be too reflective.
Our 50" is in the family rom, which faces west, so it has a lot of afternoon sun, but even then, reflections arent a big problem (of course, my previous set, s Sony Wega, had a reflective screen, too, so maybe I'm just used to it). But anyway, all of our serious viewing doesnt happen until late in the day, so no problems at all then.
