Which ones have decent playback quality (video + sound) ?
Pioneer ?
Panasonic ?
Follow Ups:
The menu system etc on the Pioneer recorders are head and shoulders above the opposition IMHO. I usually play DVDs through another unit but listen to music programs recorded on the hard drive of the Pioneer and the quality of reproduction is fine. I've been using these recorders for 4 years now so recommend them with confidence.
I post a lot on an Aussie video site and you might find the sections around no 10 of a big essay I've put up there interesting. It has had over 100,000 hits so some appear to have found it useful!

Sadly (or is it happily?) an incurable audio-video nutter with an indecent number of toys. Classical music forever!!!!
I can only speak of the Pioneer recorder I have compared to my OLD Sony player and Panny player (not recorders). Played through my PJ, the Panny kills the Pioneer as far as picture goes, and sound I think was also better. The Sony had the best sound of the three but showed it's weakness being a firt gen player as far as video is concerned. Just my small experience.
