Hi Jack,
Yeah, I hear you. Your set is probably not as old as mine, but I was very pleasantly surprised at the picture quality improvement. So much so that you might just want to give it a try. One thing -- have a vacuum cleaner w/ wand handy -- I keep my set pretty clean, but under that cover was all sort of dust. Blown or sucked in by the fan I guess. In any case removing it can't hurt. Behind that lamp is a critical area (you'll see) - so remove the dust before displacing the lamp.
Cheers, Joe
Follow Ups:
I got mine in November '05. Last September, I had the Optical Block replaced, and the service guy vacuumed and cleaned the whole insides out. It was pretty bad. I'll probably vacuum it out anyway when I change the bulb. New bulbs are initially brighter, and need about 100hrs to burn in, plus the last few hundred hours the bulbs tend to be somewhat dull, so I'm not surprised you saw a big difference.
Enjoy,
Jack
