Jack, you should get out more. Elites are most certainly available on the net for discounted prices. I know. I bought one. And it arrived in perfect condition four days after I bought it with no dead pixels, and no buzzing. I'm sure some folks have bad experiences buying over the net, but that was not my experience ... not even close. Even with shipping I saved around $700 off the price that the thieves at BB would have charged me and I avoided the sales taxes. So, all in all, I reckon I saved a good chunk over a grand. That kind of money is worth taking a chance over in my book.
Follow Ups:
I thought Pioneer had rules about selling their Elites online. Nice to know. I'm glad you had no problems, as with most people, I assume. That said, the thought of having to repack a 60" plasma due to shipping damage or whatever, doesn't thrill me. I also take complaints about makes/models seriously now.
I'm just starting to do my homework, I don't know if I'm going to buy a new set soon or wait until the Optical Block in my Sony goes. We'll see.
Jack
