The following pertains to the lossless codecs and transmission via HDMI:
Where the lossless codecs are concerned, they have to be decoded to PCM somewhere. The decoding can happen in the player or in the receiver/processor. If the player does the decoding, multiple channels of PCM are output to the receiver/processor via HDMI. If the player is capable of sending the compressed track over HDMI (not all players can do this), then it's up to the receiver/processor to do the decoding of the compressed track to PCM. Not all receivers/processors can decode the new lossless codecs. There are also players which can do both (but not at the same time), decode internally and bitstream (send the track over HDMI without decoding it first).
The PS3 will decode the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack from its losslessly compressed state (similar to a zip file for computers) into multiple channels of PCM (similar to what's on a CD, except more channels). The multiple channels of PCM can then be transmitted over the HDMI cable to your Denon receiver. The receiver will show something like Multi-Channel PCM on the display. It won't show Dolby TrueHD because the PS3 has decoded the compressed data, which is the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack, into PCM.
Follow Ups:
As for SACD, the 20, 60 and current 80GB models play SACD. The 40GB model doesn't play SACDs (except for the CD layer). I believe there's a new model 80GB to be released (or it may already be out) that doesn't play SACDs. Make sure that if you want SACD playback, the model that you get will actually read the SACD layer of SACDs.
thanks everyone. Joe, yes the new 80 gig models are out now without the sacd at the stores. I have been looking for an older one. My son has an 80 gig model that I got him for Xmas that has sacd and backwards compatability with PS2 games. I told him i would buy him a new one if he gives me that one so I can have the sacd functionality. He lives with my ex so his ps3 isn't over at my place all the time.He doesnt play ps2 games anymore so he agreed. He's 13 yrs old and thought I was trying to con hm at first. Hehehe.
