Is there a way to get digital sound to a processor with outboard HDMI switching?

....from a cable box. The box has rca outs, component outs, and an HDMI out as well.

Probably a dumb question, but not obvious to me.

Gefen makes a little box that will strip out the audio from an HDMI stream and output both the HDMI as well as the audio.
