Thanks for taking the time to provide me with a clear explanation. In your opinion would the Pioneer Elite display do a better job of the upconversion than the Integra receiver? Standard Comcast cable and older DVD's played through an, as of yet unpurchased, BlueRay player would be my only concerns.

No idea. I've got no first hand experience of Onkyo receivers or of Pioneer plasmas and I've never used upconversion myself.
I'm a very recent starter in the HT side of things after decades in audio. HT is a recent retirement flirtation for me. Until I got my HD Loewe LCD TV, I was running a CRT with S-video connections at best. With the LCD screen I also replaced my sources and simply went HDMI all the way. It's certainly the simplest connection approach and produces what I think are great results.
