Join the local Freecycle mailing list. Either wait for someone to offer a TV, or post a "Wanted" message. Folks who've bought flatpanel sets are literally giving away decent CRT TVs. It wouldn't hurt to watch Craigslist, Kijijijijiji, etc for ads as well, and cruise thrift stores.
If you've got a few hundred bucks to spare, with some luck you may be able to score a monster CRT HDTV. While they were big and very heavy, the picture quality could be superb, and they might well outlive many of the flatpanel displays sold today. Don't ignore eBay, if you can find one within pickup distance. The cost of shipping should deter most other bidders.

At minimum, your life would be simplified if you could find a used CRT TV set with red and white RCA audio in jacks, and a yellow video in jack. Better still would be red and white audio out jacks on the TV which could go to your sony switchbox and to your setup that drives the in-wall speakers. But you can use the audio in and out jacks on the used VCR as a substitute. If a TV set has a headphone jack, that can also be configured as an audio output jack to drive external amp and speakers, and at the same time kill the sound from the TV speakers. You need a stereo mini plug twin RCA type plug cable to do this, readily available.
