I'll chime in on the smallest item first, the HDMI cable. Go to Monoprice.com and get one from there for a few bucks; do not get ripped off by spending $30-40-more on such a cable. It's a digital transfer device. It either works or it doesn't.
Consider a Sony PS3 game station. It is fast, upgradeable, and looks very good with both regular DVDs and Blu-Rays. I have never touched video games, but I wouldn't part with this for Blu-Ray playback for anything out there.
For surround packages, Klipsch has some decent ones (I use them in a smaller environment.) You get a center and either 2 or 4 surround speakers.
A few ideas, just don't forget what I said about HDMI cables :-)
Best,
CC.
