If something significant in the drive mechanism has failed, most players will go into a "fail-safe" mode where they will attempt to ensure that you don't get a disc stuck in the player. They do that by automatically opening the drawer.
Time to get your Panasonic repaired, or replaced.

...Thanks for your reply. I thought I’d ask in case there was some type of quirk that was easily user fixed.
Wifey now knows she needs to take it to the repairer :o)
