You wrote that the "flat screen" uses LCD, but neglected to mention what technology the "rear projection" TV uses. It could be CRT, LCD, LCoS/SXRD, or DLP (although I'm not sure if Sony used this). SXRD and CRT can outperform LCD for PQ.

I bought the Sony SXRD because it looked better than any LCD set, and was VERY close to the Pioneer Elite plasma but 1/2 the price. The Sony XBR widescreen CRT was better only in the black level, but at more than 200lbs for a 34" screen I wanted no part of it.

That way it's easy to move the KV34-XBR910 or 970 anywhere you need it.
With 14 2" ball casters on the bottom it easily rolls on carpet.
