They aimed for the PS3. If they can get very close to, equal or even better the PS3 in most of the areas of playback/function/speed, they will no doubt have the Number 1 stand-alone player for about 95% of the informed Blu-ray crowd. This is of course based on the information that they have released re: the player's expected capabilities at launch, not what it can do now (somewhat limited).
As for All Region play, it doesn't look like support will be easy (I said this was probably going to be a sticking point with this player). There's a simple work-around: just use a decrypting program for the other-than-Region 1 DVDs and burn them as Region 0/1 discs. Dual-layer blank DVDs are too inexpensive (Meritline.com has Ritek/Ridata @ $1 each) to whine about this issue (considering what the player will do for you) and copy protection busters are available for free (since most of the crowd here is comprised of a bunch of cheap-asses, I'm sure the word free produces a wealth of stroked boners).
I really need to stop with the visuals...
