In February of 2009, televisions receiving their signals from OTA (Over The Air) antennas will no longer find analog signals on their tuner. The stations they normally receive will, at that time or even shortly before that date, begin transmitting their signals only in digital. Televisions, VCRs, DVD recorders, etc without digital tuners will need a digital-to-analog converter box in order to "see" these digital signals.
That's all there is to the digital transition: it has nothing to do with HDTV aka High Definition Television. You can get High Definition signals from numerous sources right now -- there's no need to wait.

so it won’t go away altogether however, I agree that all of the TV signals will be in digital format come next year. Though some short wave radio and AM/FM signal would still be around.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

I try not to cross it. You know, the one dividing "Thanks for the information." and "Tell me more about...". By the way, there's even more to it than your info (ie, some analog television broadcasting won't be going away).
Ooops...
