thanks Joe and my apolgies for the late acknowledgement of your feedback.Right now, I'm at the concept stage and just thinking through how all this will fit together. Not having done a ton of research I'm leaning towards:
- PS3 or Oppo BDP-83
- Panasonic 46PZ85U (now less than $1K at Frys) - 3 HDMI inputs
- Dish VIP622 DVR (just added this)This will start life as a 2-channel system, and I'll add the receiver and surround sound later.
So my preliminary thoughts are to connect the PS3 and DVR to the TV via HDMI and connect each source to my current preamp with RCA IC's. As you mention, probably best to experiment with the various cable formats to optimize things.

Can't wait until Panasonic comes out with their NeoPDPs in Q3 09. It's amazing how much the cost of owning a plasma has come down in the last 5 years. Un-friggin-real...
You can't go wrong with either of your two Blu-ray player candidates. The PS3 will add gaming, internet capabilities and several other features. If you're looking for SACD and DVD-A playback, the oppo will have that at release. The PS3 offers SACD, but only the 20/60GB and former 80GB models can do it. If you're used to stand-alone players and/or need infrared remote/universal remote programming capability, the oppo is the way to go. On the plus side, once you use the PS3's on-screen user interface, you may begin to loathe stand-alone on-screen user interfaces (I know I sure do). The oppo will have stereo and multi-channel analog output (the PS3 only has stereo analog output), so that may be a consideration re: receiver choices. I'd just go with with a quality HDMI v1.3 capable receiver and bypass analog at this stage of the game, however. If you have a large DVD collection, the oppo will have the better deinterlacer for about 10% (that's not a typo) of your collection.
