If you can possibly manage it, go for the Pio Elite. IMO, the differences are NOT small. If budget doesn't allow, go for the Panny - its bang for buck quotient is hard to argue with. But make no mistake about it; the Pio Elites are on a whole nuther level from everything else out there.
Follow Ups:
I don't know how it is in the U.S., in Canada you cannot compare the Pio Elite side by side with their regular models because they are never sold at the same dealers. The Elites cost quite a lot more than the corresponding non-Elite models. I would *really* like to compare mano a mano and not rely on my imperfect video memory. I do not like this aspect of Pioneer's marketing. I think it should be like this: an Elite dealer is allowed to sell non-Elite, but regular Pio dealers are not allowed to sell Elite. That way an Elite dealer, who are presumably a head above the big-box stores, could demo the advantages of the Elites to our faces instead of just with words.
That said, the top Pannys and all the Pioneers are great displays, it's not like you'd be making a bad decision whichever you choose.
