Sorry, I should have clarified that the CD I was referring to are CD-R of music with rates of 88 and 96 khz downloaded from Linn's online catalog. Please forgive me for my ignorance. I am confused with all these formats, rates, and digital stuff. Can the CD-R be burnt at a higher sample rate than 44 khz? Maybe this is the problem. Movie DVD do read at 48 khz.
Thank you you for your help.

You should be able to bitstream MCH info from say a DVD, DVDA or cable box. I have the Panny 55. I think there are multiple settings for HDMI and other audio outputs. You can turn off the HDMI audio out. I don't think you can record to a CDR in anything other than PCM at 16/44.1. Toggle the panny settings between bitstream and PCM to see what happens. THe Rotel is probably going to sound better doing the decoding instead of the Panny.
