Problematic; not really in most cases. Less than ideal in some cases, sure. It depends on the room, system, acoustics, position of the outward people and the quality of said center channel plus how well it matches the mains. Ideally you want 3 identical speakers across the front, all positioned the same height and orientation. Not always easy.
In some systems (Maggie's are a good example) I'd take the better sweet spot without a center channel, and live with a >maybe< less-than-perfect off-axis sound. That said, unless you get a premium center I think you're better off in many (if not most) systems with none at all.
