I haven't tested either obviously.
But, I've read a few reviews here and on CNet. I gathered that most prefered the Panny over the Sony.
So, - you're saying that the picture of the Panny and Sony on BluRay are pretty close with the Panny having the narrow edge, but the Sony is much better for upscaling DVDs that are not BluRay?
Thanks again for all of your comments!!

Remember it's not *me* saying this. I have only had the PS3 and Sony 350 here for longer periods. Now, don't forget he was directly comparing in his own home on a calibrated Kuro. Some may say "this looks good" etc., and until they have seen others, it does seem pretty good. Like, I say the PS3 and 350 look "pretty good" with upscaled DVDs, in isolation. Compared to what? Non-upscaled DVDs? But in reality they are not that good, but acceptable, I have seen many that are better. It is one feature I will make sure my next BDP excels at, now that there's better gear out there and I know to value it more (thanks to BD prices not dropping as fast as I expected, in fact they seem to have gone up, and I'm not buying nearly as many as I thought I would be).
He thought the Pio 51 was MUCH better than the Panny 55 with upscaled DVD films. And slightly better than the Sony 550. He thought the Panny DVD upscaling looked too artificial, the way some people complain about BD film transfers when they've had too much DNR and all the grain is scrubbed out. Just his opinion. He had no problem with any of them for BD playback, and liked the speed of the Panny.
Edit: I guess I should say that on the web there are basically two divergent groups of opinions on how BDs should look. One thinks they should ALL look like Pixar, scrubbed free of all grain. The other thinks they should look like film, and even more like film than DVD does. These are very very different opinions.
Without mentioning names, those reviewers who think all BD (and upscaled DVDs) that are close to Pixar in texture will prefer the Panny with its apparently undefeatable DNR with DVD upscaling. I guess Panny thinks it makes the DVDs look "better", and some will agree because they're "cleaner"...one school of thought.
As with anything, reviews are only meaningful when they come from someone who you know how they think. Especially so for BD reviews and BDPs, massive difference of expectations on the web, even from long-established reviewers. If you've never had a BDP nor a decent DVD upscaler they ALL look good, and are good. Compared to "before". It's pretty hard to go wrong...

There have been 2 recent reviews of the Panny 35/55. One in Home Theater mag by Kris Deering of Secrets of HT website fame. He specifically stated the Pannys 35/55 had one of the best BD PQ's going and previous models 30/50 were lacking in DVD PQ but not anymore with the new 35/55. His quote, " You would truly be hard-pressed to find better video performance with Blu-ray and DVD playback at any price."
I own the 55 and I think the 35/55 is amazing with what it does for DVD over HDMI. BD PQ is fantastic as well. Cannot say what it does in synergy with a KURO. The Panny 35/55 is OOP and hard to find and prices are generally higher on them than they were 6 months ago. New models have been announced and Crutchfield is taking pre-orders. One the surface, the only difference in the new units is some streaming and VOD capability.
