I'm between two canon HD camcorders HF100 and HG20. Although they offer a different feature set, for me, it really boils down to the issue as to whether the extra $75-100 can achieve noticeably superior video going from 17 mbps to 24 mbps? I don't have any experience with camcorders, and this purchase will be almost exclusively to document the kids as they grow up. Any feedback would be appreciated!

My opinion: better is better. I shoot broadcast video, so for me, there is never such a thing as 'too good a picture'. But I think that applies to home use too.
Think down the road, 10-20 years. Your kids most likely will have a 100-inch screen or so by then (and you might too.) The bigger the screen, the more the picture needs to be up to it in terms of quality. The $75-100 will soon enough be forgotten, but the picture quality will always be there. And these are your family memories; you get one chance to shoot them.
The very fact that you are asking indicates your awareness of the quality issue. Don't scrimp. If the features on the better camcorder are to your liking, go for the better picture quality. You won't regret it.
And good luck shooting; if you have questions, feel free to post/PM if you need advice.

I appreciate your expert feedback, and especially for framing this decision in the proper context. The decision seems pretty easy put this way.
Thanks ~ Rio
