I'll make a comparison on the strength.
Between my computer savy daughter and myself I'm sure we'll get it sorted out. Have to, spent the money and the old Logitech is worn out.

Yes, the instructions can seem a bit daunting at first, but once you've done a few minor things it won't seem so bad. Their instructions are actually pretty good as far as these things go. I rarely need the instructions anymore, even with my lousy memory, and often change my remote on the fly when I think of something better.
The IR output of URC models is usually sufficient as long as you're in the same room. I don't even have to aim the remote at the boxes, though some are less sensitive than others. The IR output is so wide and strong that usually enough hits by bouncing off the walls or whatever.
One tip is not to use rechargeable batteries. Especially since the R50 uses cheap and relatively long-lasting AAs. With 4 of them, the nominal 1.2V greater voltage of alkaline will likely make a huge difference for IR output IME. I used rechargeables for years and prefer the increased IR performance of alkalines albeit at increased cost (mine uses 4xAAA which don't last that long).
