I recently picked up a Pioneer BDP-51FD to replace my aging Sony BDPS1. This player is an overachiever with excellent upconversion of DVD and with sound better than a $300 player should be. Some quirks but I can live with them at the price. Highly recommended. (do the firmware upgrades - but this applies to all blurays)
Cheers
Follow Ups:
Pioneer forces one to the "Elite" players if you want audio via HDMI and connect the video with component to a display.
This necessarily will not effect the majority of potential adopters to Blu Ray but enough folks still have older displays with only component, no HDMI. I don't think any other company forces one to a much more expensive player to do something even their $150 player can.
