I was thinking of a 50" plasma but I am concerned the 50" would
blow up the image of a standard def DVD to the point where it looks
soft (less sharp). Maybe a 42" plasma would look better for 100% DVD
viewing?
Also would a 720P model of either 42" or 50" be better than 1080P
since the native resolution of 720P is closer to the 480P resolution
of DVDs? (IE less upscaling??)

Don't worry. I have a 60" screen, and SD DVDs look fine upscaled. Granted, its not as good as HD, but its still good nonetheless.

That would be a HUGE mistake. Do they still sell 720p models? Get 1080p. If you ever get into blu-ray, or get HD broadcasts, you'll end up down rezing them.
Just do it.
