I have a similar vintage VCR, I think an SLV-980HF (?), in our bedroom. We still use it to time shift for some programs, but if it were to bite the dust, another DVD recorder would make it's way into our house. It IS 11 years old after all, and VCR's have TONS of moving parts; it's just not worth repairing IMO.
If you have tapes you can't/won't replace with DVD, either have them converted to DVD or buy a new VCR. In general I've always found Sony to make good quality units, so another Sony VCR may be in order if you must.
